Chlamydia is the UK's most common curable sexually transmitted infection. It is caused by bacteria and is easily passed on through unprotected anal or vaginal sex with an infected person. It can also be transmitted on fingers from one person to another and from a mother to her baby during birth.
Chlamydia is often called 'The Silent Infection' because there are very few signs or symptoms. 70% of women and half of all men with chlamydia have no signs or symptoms.
If left untreated, chlamydia can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility in women. In men it can lead to a painful infection in the testicles and reduced fertility.
Chlamydia can cause complications during pregnancy and childbirth if left untreated.
If you are 24 or under and live in Luton or Bedfordshire you can be screened for chlamydia at a number of sites or request a chlamydia home testing kit. All you have to do is provide a urine sample and post it back, both the kit and postage are free so testing for chlamydia couldn't be easier!
If you test positive, you will be offered free antibiotics. With your permission, all sexual partners will be traced and offered treatment - contact cards will be sent to them anonymously. This is done to prevent re-infection of chlamydia and to stop it from spreading further.
