Contraception

When a young person asks for contraception it's usually a sign that they've made a mature decision even if they haven't used contraception before. Health professionals, such as doctors or nurses can provide both contraceptive advice and treatment to young people under the age of 16 without the parents knowing, as long as the professional is satisfied that the young person is able to understand fully the implications of any treatment and to make a choice of the treatment proposed.

Doctors do have to follow guidelines if a young person is under the age of 16 and may suggest that they talk to their parents about this so it is unlikely that a doctor or nurse can refuse a young person contraception.

If a doctor does refuse to give a young person contraception they can ask why and can try another doctor, family planning or young people's clinic or any of the agencies listed under agency pages.

It doesn't matter what age the person is or whether they are male or female. Many clinics run sessions especially for young people.
